The Democratic Front (DF), under the leadership of Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, is reportedly planning a bold political move aimed at weakening National Unity Platform (NUP) influence in Greater Masaka by fronting a popular television personality as a parliamentary candidate.

According to highly placed sources within DF, the party intends to field Maurice Mukiibi, a well-known presenter on BBS Telefayina, to contest for the Mawogola South County seat currently held by Gorretti Namugga of NUP. Insiders claim the decision is both strategic and personal.

Namugga has allegedly been at the forefront of criticizing Mpuuga over the controversial Shs500 million “service award” scandal — accusations believed to have been directed by NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine). DF sources argue that Mukiibi’s candidacy is meant to push back against what they see as politically motivated attacks.

Mukiibi, known for hosting the popular morning political talk show Zuukuka n’Ensonga on BBS TV, has reportedly informed station management of his intentions to step away from media duties to pursue a political career. He is said to be quietly building both financial and grassroots support in preparation for the 2026 general elections.

Observers note that Mukiibi has frequently defended Mpuuga on-air and criticized Bobi Wine for how he handled the internal fallout within NUP. His outspoken commentary and media influence have already made waves among political watchers.

A senior DF source, speaking anonymously, said:

“Bringing in a media figure like Mukiibi will shake things up. He has name recognition, connects with the public, and will certainly cause panic within the NUP ranks.”

If confirmed, Mukiibi’s entry into politics could set the stage for a heated contest in Mawogola South and further deepen tensions between DF and NUP — two opposition-leaning factions now at odds.

The 2026 elections are already shaping up to be a defining moment for Uganda’s opposition politics, and Greater Masaka may once again become a major battleground.
