In a bold move that has sent ripples through Uganda’s political landscape, Lawrence Alionzi, popularly known as “Dangote,” has officially crossed from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The former Makerere University Guild President, accompanied by a group of youth leaders, was warmly welcomed by NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, at the party’s headquarters. Alionzi also picked nomination forms to contest for the Mayor of Arua City, signaling his ambition to shape the future of his home city.
Alionzi, a charismatic and influential figure among Uganda’s youth, cited a lack of clear ideology and strategic leadership in the opposition as his reason for joining the NRM. “I want to be a participant, not a spectator, in shaping the future of Arua and our country,” he declared. His decision reflects a growing sentiment among some young leaders who believe the ruling party offers a stronger platform to drive meaningful change.
Speaking at the event, Secretary General Todwong expressed excitement about the influx of young, dynamic leaders into the NRM.
“We are thrilled to welcome Lawrence and other youth leaders into the movement,” he said. “Their energy and vision are exactly what we need to build a stronger, more inclusive future for Uganda.”
Alionzi’s move is seen as a significant boost for the NRM, particularly in Arua City, where he is expected to leverage his popularity and leadership experience to rally support. Known for his vibrant leadership as Makerere University’s Guild President, Alionzi brings a fresh perspective and a passion for grassroots development to the NRM’s ranks.
As he prepares to contest for the mayoral seat, Alionzi has promised to focus on transformative projects that will uplift Arua City. “I want to see Arua thrive—better infrastructure, more opportunities for the youth, and a city we can all be proud of,” he said. His defection and candidacy have already sparked conversations, with many eager to see how his leadership will shape the city’s future.
The crossover of Alionzi and his fellow youth leaders underscores a pivotal moment for Uganda’s political scene, as young voices seek platforms to drive progress. With his bold vision and the NRM’s backing, “Dangote” is poised to make a lasting impact, both in Arua and beyond.
