Political tension is reportedly growing within the camp of Kampala City Lord Mayor Ssaalongo Erias Lukwago due to concerns surrounding his health. Reliable sources indicate that Lukwago may be forced to reconsider his political ambitions in the 2026 general elections.

The Lord Mayor was recently flown to India, where he underwent a complicated and delicate surgery. Following the operation, doctors provided strict medical guidelines necessary for him to maintain his health and possibly extend his life. These rules have sparked anxiety among his political handlers, who are unsure how he will navigate the rigorous demands of another campaign.

Among the post-surgery restrictions, Lukwago has been instructed to avoid noisy environments, not wear ties, and sit on soft chairs during prolonged engagements. It’s also understood that the doctors inserted plastic nerves in his neck, making his condition extremely sensitive. As a result, he has been seen wearing noise-cancellation gadgets, particularly during court sessions involving Dr. Kizza Besigye, due to the noise from political supporters.

These medical conditions make the typical campaign activities—especially mass rallies—nearly impossible. Campaign agents are now worried about how he will reach the electorate without violating medical advice.

Insiders also reveal that some individuals are pushing Lukwago to consider contesting as PFF (People’s Front for Transition) President and possibly as a Presidential candidate, especially in light of fears that Dr. Kizza Besigye might not be released from Luzira Prison. However, Lukwago is reportedly hesitant, viewing the position as less financially beneficial compared to his current role in KCCA.

Adding to his political setbacks, Lukwago recently suffered a blow when Nalongo Oliver Namazzi, KCCA Minister of Health and long-time political ally, defected to the National Unity Platform (NUP). Namazzi, who has worked closely with Lukwago since 2016, including during their time in PFF, is said to have made the move under pressure. Reports suggest she feared losing her Nakawa West Councilor seat after NUP members expressed interest in the position.

NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) is reportedly pleased with Namazzi’s defection, valuing her political experience, financial muscle, and determination. She is now considered a high-priority candidate for the party in the upcoming elections.

The situation leaves Lukwago’s political future uncertain as his team grapples with balancing his fragile health and the demands of an intense electoral campaign.
