With just hours to the release of the final list of party flag bearers, speculation is mounting that Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Ssegona could be on the verge of losing the NUP card for 2026.
Insiders say things have not gone his way during the vetting process. Despite his influence, none of the division councillor aspirants he fronted made it onto the list. Instead, most of those aligned with Mayor and singer-turned-politician Mathias Walukaga sailed through and are now jubilating.
This development has reportedly unsettled Ssegona, who over the weekend vowed not to surrender his seat easily—even if denied the party nomination. His declaration has fueled speculation about his next political move.
Some observers believe that should NUP drop him, Ssegona might take the independent route, banking on his strong personal support base in Busiro East. Others whisper that he could seek refuge in the Democratic Front, a new political formation linked to his close ally and former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga.
For now, the MP remains tight-lipped about his ultimate decision, but his unease is evident. He faces stiff competition from Walukaga and businessman Magoola, the latter remembered for financing the paving of NUP headquarters in Kavule.
Whether Ssegona survives the NUP vetting storm or jumps ship remains to be seen. What is certain is that the Busiro East contest is shaping up as one of the most intriguing political battles ahead of 2026.
