The President of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Hon. Jimmy James Michael Akena Obote, is set to pick presidential nomination forms this Friday from the Electoral Commission headquarters, confirming his intent to contest in the 2026 general elections.

The announcement was made on Thursday, August 14, 2025, during a well-attended rally in Lira City West Division, organized by Hon. Vincent Shedrick Obong Eyit, the UPC parliamentary candidate for the area. Thousands of enthusiastic UPC delegates gathered to hear the news and show their support.

A wave of celebration swept through the crowd as it was revealed that Akena—son of former President Milton Obote—would be formally entering the race for Uganda’s highest office. His candidacy is seen as a revival of the party’s national agenda and legacy.

Speaking at the rally, Hon. Obong Eyit said the party will soon unveil a comprehensive manifesto highlighting Akena’s vision and new policy direction for Uganda. He emphasized four key pillars of their platform, which he believes will address the country’s most pressing needs.

Eyit was joined by his wife, Imat Delish Obongi, and other UPC aspirants who introduced themselves to the delegates. Among them was Awidi Maureen, who is vying against Eyit in the upcoming UPC primary elections for Lira City West Division, scheduled for August 16, 2025.

Rose Ongom, a candidate for the position of representative for older persons, also addressed the crowd, praising Hon. Eyit for his efforts in improving local infrastructure, including road rehabilitation.

The rally not only solidified support for Akena’s presidential ambitions but also showcased the party’s readiness to mobilize grassroots support ahead of both the primaries and the national elections.
