A fatal road accident in Isingiro District on Friday evening claimed the lives of seven people. The accident involved a bus belonging to Global Bus Company and a Fuso Truck.

The accident happened at around 6:30pm at Kyeirumba trading centre along Isingiro-Mbarara road. The bus was heading to Kikagate in Isingiro from Mbarara, while the truck was heading to Mbarara City.

The Officer in-charge of Traffic in Isingiro District, Ms Ritah Kiyuba, said the accident was caused by speeding. She said the driver of the Fuso Truck was speeding and trying to negotiate a sharp corner when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the bus.

Seven people, all boys between 20 and 30 years of age, who were atop the Fuso Truck were killed on the spot. The bus occupants survived with injuries.

The survivors were taken to different health facilities for medical attention, while the deceased were taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.

A witness, Mr James Katureebe, said the driver of the Fuso Truck was speeding on a slope and failed to negotiate a corner, which led to the accident.

The police have opened an investigation into the accident.
