Uganda has advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 Women’s Rugby Africa 7s, securing a 17-12 victory over Tunisia, though the team faces significant injury concerns ahead of their next match.

(Accra, Ghana) – Uganda has advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 Women’s Rugby Africa 7s, overcoming a physically demanding Tunisia side with a 17-12 win in the quarterfinals. However, the victory came at a heavy cost, as two key players, Sandra Amoli Lona and Tina Akello, sustained injuries during the match, raising concerns about the team’s strength moving forward.

Amoli Lona, who suffered an ankle injury, and Akello, who injured her arm, are now doubtful for the remainder of the tournament. Their injuries have left Uganda with a significantly reduced squad of only ten players for their upcoming matches. Despite these setbacks, the team remains focused on their goal to secure a spot in the 2025 World Rugby 7s Challenger Series.

Uganda’s next challenge comes in the form of neighbors Kenya, who triumphed over hosts Ghana with a commanding 48-0 victory in their quarterfinal. The highly anticipated semifinal between Uganda and Kenya will take place at 3:50 p.m. EAT (12:50 p.m. local time), with the winner advancing to the Challenger Series. The loser will still have a chance to compete in the bronze medal match.

The tournament’s stakes are high, as the winner of the semifinal will earn a coveted spot in the 2025 World Rugby 7s Challenger Series.
