Kenyan men devote more time to self-care and maintenance than their female counterparts, according to a report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in 2023.
The KNBS report indicates that, on average, Kenyan men spend about 710 minutes per day on self-care, equivalent to approximately 11.83 hours daily, to maintain their well-groomed appearance. In contrast, women spend around 704.6 minutes per day, translating to 11.73 hours, on their grooming and self-care routines.
The report further highlights that men allocate more time to cultural, leisure, mass media, and sports activities compared to women. Nationally, men spend 158.1 minutes on these activities, while women dedicate 118.8 minutes.
In urban areas, men spend 67 minutes per day on non-productive activities, surpassing the 57 minutes spent in rural areas. Conversely, women in rural areas spend 282 minutes daily on non-productive activities compared to 272 minutes for their urban counterparts.
Regarding socializing, communication, community participation, and religious practices, men spend an average of 103.2 minutes, while women allocate 90.3 minutes.
The report concludes that, across all counties, men generally spend more time on non-System of National Accounts (SNA) productive activities than women. The opposite holds true for time spent on non-SNA productive activities.
The survey involved 19,522 sampled households, with 16,945 households participating in the survey and successfully completing the questionnaire, resulting in a national household response rate of 86.8 percent. The time-use module focused on individuals aged 15 years and older, with 40,764 eligible individuals randomly selected from the interviewed households.
