In a parliamentary session on Wednesday, Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi was expelled from Parliament after he raised questions regarding the source of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s wealth. Atandi, a member of the Azimio coalition, expressed concerns about the money Gachagua distributed in churches and political gatherings, asking about its origin.

During the proceedings, Atandi criticized the Kenya Kwanza government, attributing the high cost of living in the country to corruption within its ranks.

He stated, “This government has allowed corruption at all levels, with the Deputy President openly carrying sacks of money to make donations in various places. Displaying corruption while aiming for the country’s prosperity is not a viable approach. Therefore, we must address these issues for the nation to progress.”

Atandi’s remarks initiated a contentious exchange with Acting Speaker Rachael Nyamai, the Kitui South MP, who called on Atandi to substantiate or retract his comments.

Nyamai explained, “The language you’re using is unparliamentary. According to Standing Order 91, you portrayed the Deputy President in a negative light and mentioned carrying money in bags. I wish to invoke Standing Order; responsibility for a statement of fact, and I request you to either substantiate your claims, withdraw them, or face expulsion. Will you withdraw your statement and offer an apology?”

Atandi responded, “I am discussing corruption, and I do not see any reason to retract my statement because it is evident that government officials are involved in corrupt practices.”

He added, “I would also like to point out that the Deputy President is seen carrying millions in bags for donations. According to the law, one cannot withdraw more than Ksh1 million from their account. Where is this money coming from?”

In response to Atandi’s comments, Nyamai instructed him to leave the parliamentary chambers.

“As the speaker, I previously cautioned you. However, I will invoke Standing Order 107 1 (F), which addresses acts of disorderly conduct involving unsubstantiated claims made by a member. I hereby order you to exit the House,” she announced.
