On Sunday, December 17, 2023, ten people sustained serious injuries in Lamu County when the aircraft they were traveling in crashed in the Kiunga area.

A video obtained by various Kenyan media outlets displayed the light aircraft engulfed in flames, likely due to impact with the ground. Reports revealed that the plane was carrying a Kenya Defence Forces pilot and nine other officers attached to KDF.

Firefighters promptly arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire. The aircraft, departing from the Kiunga Airstrip, hit electricity poles before crashing. The wreckage scattered across a palm tree-filled thicket, underscoring the severity of the tragedy.

The crash affected a significant area, including a ramshackle house nearby. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.

In a similar incident a month ago, two people sustained injuries when a KDF chopper crashed during takeoff at Wajir Airport. A 31-second clip captured the chopper ascending before suddenly crashing in front of a gathered crowd. The victims were rushed to Wajir County Referral Hospital and later referred to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
