City of Johannesburg Postpones Council Meeting Due to Infrastructure Challenges
The City of Johannesburg’s council meeting on September 27, 2023, had to be canceled because of problems with electricity and water supply at the Johannesburg Metro Centre in Braamfontein. The meeting couldn’t take place virtually because of power cuts affecting the homes of council members.
Speaker Colleen Makhubele mentioned concerns about health and safety related to using the facility, the absence of suitable council facilities on the scheduled date, and the high cost of external venues as reasons for the cancellation.
The Metro Centre had lost electricity since a fire caused by faulty transformers on September 16. Plans to find new locations and resolve communication issues remained uncertain. The City hoped to secure a venue in Brixton for a council meeting at the end of October.
