John Steenhuisen, the Leader of the Democratic Alliance, expressed deep concern over the recent arrest of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine by guerrilla soldiers upon his return to Uganda. In a statement, Steenhuisen revealed that he had spent Wednesday evening with Bobi Wine in Johannesburg, where the Ugandan politician shared his frustrations about living under an oppressive state.
Steenhuisen called attention to the ongoing assault on democracy and freedom in Uganda under President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership, emphasizing the stifling and arrest of dissenting voices. He criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa for what he perceived as passive support for countries and regimes that disregard principles of freedom, democracy, and human rights, which are enshrined in South Africa’s constitution.
As the former African Union Chairperson and the leader of a nation with a principled constitution, Steenhuisen urged President Ramaphosa to speak out against oppressive governments and dictators in Africa who threaten the foundations of freedom and democracy across the continent. He highlighted that Bobi Wine’s arrest occurred shortly after President Ramaphosa attended the inauguration of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, following a controversial election.
Steenhuisen also expressed concern about South Africa’s alliances with Iran and Saudi Arabia through the 2023 BRICS Summit, countries known for suppressing democracy and rights of women and minorities. He emphasized that South Africa should advocate for democracy promotion and protection across the continent.
