Uganda Commissions Tanzanian and Malian Cadets

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, also the Commander-In-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), led the commissioning ceremony of 774 officer cadets who successfully completed their one-year training course at the Basic Military Training School- Kaweweta on Tuesday, June 4th.

Among the commissioned officers, 28 were drawn from Tanzania and Mali, representing a cross-border collaboration in military training.

At the Basic Military Training School- Kaweweta, cadets undergo comprehensive training that encompasses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for military service. The curriculum covers various aspects of military operations, including weapons handling, tactical maneuvers, physical fitness, leadership development, and discipline.




Cadets at Kaweweta undergo rigorous physical and mental training designed to instill discipline, resilience, and teamwork. They participate in drills, exercises, and simulations that simulate real-world scenarios, preparing them for the challenges they may face in their military careers.




In addition to military training, cadets at Kaweweta also receive instruction on core values such as integrity, loyalty, and service to the nation.

President Museveni congratulated the new officers for their dedication and successful completion of the rigorous training course. He emphasized the importance of exposing cadets to various elements of warfare to prepare them adequately for their roles.

Addressing the officers, President Museveni urged them to view their service in the military not merely as a job, but as a solemn responsibility to defend their country. He reflected on the historical context of the UPDF and emphasized its roots as a movement dedicated to national defense and liberation.




Additionally, President Museveni pledged continued support for the welfare of army officers, highlighting initiatives such as free housing, education for soldiers’ children, and healthcare.

Representing the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Sarah Mateke underscored the significance of the training in professionalizing the UPDF and aligning with President Museveni’s vision for African security and cooperation.

Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, commended the officers for their hard work and reminded them of the profound responsibility that comes with leadership in the military. He cautioned against corruption, cowardice, and treachery, urging the officers to uphold integrity and honor.




Brig. Gen. Bonny Geoffrey Wolimbwa, Commandant of the Basic Military Training School- Kaweweta, highlighted the officers’ journey of intense learning and emphasized the importance of their new skills in their future roles as military leaders.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including ministers and visiting delegations from Mali and Tanzania, reflecting the significance of the occasion in strengthening international cooperation and security alliances.

Upon successful completion of their training at Kaweweta, cadets are commissioned as officers in the UPDF, ready to serve their country in various capacities. The school’s graduates go on to assume leadership roles within the military, contributing to national defense, security, and peacekeeping efforts.
