African Leaders Convene in Uganda for IGAD and NAM Summits

A group of Heads of State arrived in Uganda yesterday to participate in the Heads of State and Government meeting of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.

The leaders currently in Uganda include the President of South Sudan, H.E Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of Djibouti, H.E Ismail Omar Guelleh, and the President of Somalia, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The IGAD summit is scheduled for today, January 18, 2024, at State House, Entebbe, while the NAM summit, held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, commenced on January 15, 2024, and will conclude on January 20, 2024.

At Entebbe International Airport, President Salva Kiir was received by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Affairs, Hon. John Mulimba, on behalf of the Ugandan government, and H.E Simon Juach Deng, the Ambassador of South Sudan to Uganda.

During the NAM summit, South Sudan is expected to be admitted as a new member state. President Guelleh was welcomed at Entebbe International Airport by the Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, while His Excellency Mohamud was received by the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja.
