Andrew Ssekibejja Targets Second Consecutive Uganda Golf Open Victory
In the upcoming 82nd Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Open Championship, Andrew Ssekibejja seeks to achieve back-to-back wins in the prestigious event. The tournament is set to begin at the Uganda Golf Club’s par 72 Kitante course on Wednesday.
Ssekibejja’s goal is to join the exclusive club of back-to-back champions of the Uganda Golf Open, a feat last achieved in 2016 by Ronald Otile when he secured his second of three titles.
Ssekibejja, a 26-year-old golfer, clinched his first Uganda Open title last year by carding a score of 295 over 72 holes at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course. This victory came in only his third attempt, and he is determined to defend his crown in this year’s competition.
Expressing his readiness for the tournament, Ssekibejja said, “I am looking forward to the Open, and I am determined to retain my crown. The course is in good shape, and I hope it remains that way this week. I need to keep my game on the fairway, and that has been my focus, along with improving my putting.”
Ssekibejja will face stiff competition from several contenders, including former winner Joseph Cwinyaai and the promising golfer Godfrey Nsubuga, who is making a mark on the golf circuit in Kenya and Uganda. Nsubuga recently won the Tea Fields Trophy in Kericho, Kenya, as part of his efforts to accumulate points to participate in the Magical Kenya Open and enhance his World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Cwinyaai, the 2021 winner, is aiming for his second crown and has secured sponsorship from the US-based technology company Inkozi, headquartered in Florida.
The tournament will also feature other notable competitors like Joe Kasozi, Michael Tumusiime, and golfers from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi.
The Uganda Golf Open is sponsored by Uganda Breweries Limited under the Johnnie Walker brand, with co-sponsorship from Absa Bank Uganda, Crown Beverages, Pinnacle Security Limited, NBS Sport, NCS, Royal and Ancient, Medisell, HK Properties, Case Medical Services, and Tusker Malt.
