Sydney’s iconic IMAX cinema in Darling Harbour is set to reopen its doors after a seven-year hiatus, offering moviegoers a chance to experience one of the world’s largest cinema screens. The impressive 692-square-meter screen will come to life once again on Wednesday, October 11, providing audiences with a captivating cinematic experience. The reopening lineup includes highly-anticipated films such as ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ ‘Barbenheimer,’ and Taylor Swift’s concert tour flick.
The IMAX Sydney venue underwent a complete reconstruction after closing its doors in 2016. Originally scheduled to reopen in 2019 and then in 2021, delays pushed back the relaunch date. However, the wait appears to be worth it for cinema enthusiasts.
While not the largest IMAX screen globally (that honor belongs to IMAX Melbourne), the Sydney IMAX screen is still impressive. With a 1.43 picture ratio, it offers viewers up to 40 percent more image, promising an enhanced viewing experience for films like ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘The Creator,’ and Taylor Swift’s concert.
The newly revamped IMAX Sydney boasts the most advanced theater technology by IMAX. It features 4K laser projection with a new optical engine and custom-designed lenses, resulting in brighter, higher-resolution images with deeper contrast and a wider range of colors. The theater’s audio is delivered through a 12-channel sound system.
Operated by EVT, the hospitality company behind Event Cinemas and other entertainment venues, IMAX Sydney offers a variety of seating options. In addition to standard seats, moviegoers can choose full recliners, couples’ recliners, or private boxes for up to four people. The private boxes come with exclusive food and beverage options and are situated on an elevated platform.
With 430 seats in total, the new IMAX Sydney venue retains its previous capacity. The food and beverage offerings have been updated to provide a marketplace experience, and guests can relax in the lounge area before the movie starts. IMAX Sydney also features a full-service bar.
EVT CEO Jane Hastings expressed excitement about bringing immersive cinema entertainment to Australia, emphasizing their commitment to world-class experiences. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond praised the reopening of IMAX Sydney, hailing it as a flagship location that embodies the essence of the theatrical experience.
For movie enthusiasts visiting Sydney, IMAX Sydney at Darling Harbour has become a must-visit tourist destination, offering an unparalleled cinematic experience.
IMAX Sydney will officially reopen on Wednesday, October 11, at 1/35 Wheat Road, Sydney. Tickets and additional information can be found on the cinema’s website.
