Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine marked a significant year in 2023, with his political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), experiencing a revival. The year began with the release of two imprisoned NUP MPs, followed by a nationwide tour and the inauguration of the party’s headquarters in Kampala.
Concurrently, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his MK Movement faced a decline after a strong showing in 2022. Despite birthday celebrations and high-profile events, Muhoozi’s influence waned. Bobi Wine’s visit to the UK, ending a decade-long visa ban, became a focal point, addressing previous controversies, including accusations of playing politics.
However, Bobi Wine faced criticism, notably from Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, regarding his stance on homosexuality. The opposition leader’s visit to Western capitals, including the UK, highlighted NUP’s return to prominence.
NUP’s recent opposition boycott of parliamentary activities focused on addressing issues such as missing persons and extrajudicial killings. Meanwhile, Muhoozi’s activities were limited, with his only notable event being a speech at a Royal wedding in Jinja, marked by tensions with Bobi Wine.
Bobi Wine’s “Zukuka Uganda” tour covered strategic regions, emphasizing key socio-economic issues. The tour aimed to improve electoral performance in areas where NUP faced challenges, starting in the western region and then moving through various districts.
Despite the tour’s success, security concerns, including alleged terror threats, led to its abrupt end. NUP’s third-anniversary celebration, coupled with the launch of its headquarters, showcased the party’s resilience amid challenges.
While Muhoozi retreated from the spotlight, his association with Rwandan President Paul Kagame provided diplomatic leverage. Kagame praised Muhoozi as a peacemaker, strengthening ties between the two leaders and elevating Muhoozi’s presidential candidacy profile.
