JINJA – Fear is mounting among residents and boda boda riders in Jinja following the murder of another rider in the notorious Mutai Swamp area, where a series of violent attacks have claimed four lives in the past six weeks.
The latest victim has been identified as Kayima Yosia, a boda boda rider who was reportedly attacked and killed by suspected thugs during the early hours of the night. His motorcycle was stolen from the scene, in what appears to be another robbery targeting riders.
The killing marks the fourth murder in approximately one and a half months at Mutai Swamp. According to local leaders, the victims include three civilians and one security officer, all of whom were allegedly attacked for their motorcycles.
The recurring attacks have raised alarm over the deteriorating security situation along the Jinja–Mutai route, with residents and transport operators calling for urgent intervention from security agencies.
Reacting to the latest incident, Jinja District LC5 Chairperson Moses Batwala Mbago warned that Mutai Swamp has become a high-risk area, particularly during the night.
“Mutai has become a dangerous spot. Riders and residents must exercise extreme caution when passing through this area, especially at night,” Batwala said.
He called on the Uganda Police Force to intensify security patrols along the stretch and urged the government to install CCTV surveillance cameras to help deter criminal activity and aid investigations.
Batwala also appealed to boda boda riders and other road users to avoid travelling alone after dark and to remain vigilant as authorities work to address the growing insecurity.
The latest killing has heightened concerns over what local leaders describe as a disturbing pattern of violent robberies targeting motorcycle riders, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect lives and property along the route.
