Bududa’s Political Landscape Shifts as NRM Loses Grip, NUP Rises

Friday, December 22, 2023

Bududa District currently has no Member of Parliament on the NRM ticket. Many of those with NRM tickets, like Hon. Justine Khainza, were not re-elected during the recently concluded General Elections of 2021. Hon. Nambeshe, who was raised and groomed by NRM, recently abandoned his political marriage with NRM and fled with ghetto strongman Hon. Bobi Wine. The following are reasons that may have led Hon. Nambeshe to end his political association with NRM.

During the 2016 General Elections, when Nambeshe was elected as a Member of Parliament for Manjiya, something unthinkable happened during the sharing of the national cake. Hon. Nambeshe, who had served as Mayor of Bududa Town Council and later as District Chairman of Bududa, expected to be rewarded with a ministerial position while in parliament. This did not happen. What worsened the situation was that all the LC V chairmen at that time who were elected as Members of Parliament were appointed as ministers by President Museveni. The likes of Ismail Orot, formerly LC V Chairman of Kumi, were appointed as Minister for Works. Gume, LC V Chairman of Jinja, was appointed as Minister for Cooperatives, and Vincent Ssempijja, LC V Chairman of Masaka, was appointed as a full Minister for Defense. The old man from Luwero, Hajji Naduli, was also appointed as a minister.

Hon. Nambeshe felt abandoned, and when the “Kyelondela Tabamubi” singer found Hon. Nambeshe oozing with political wounds, he quickly drafted him into the National Unity Platform (NUP) and became Vice President of Eastern Uganda. Therefore, Nambeshe became NUP on account of some unfortunate circumstances. Otherwise, the people of Manjiya voted for Hon. Nambeshe as an NRM Member of Parliament in 2016, not as a NUP legislator.

It is a settled fact that if NRM talks to Hon. Nambeshe well, he is ready to rejoin the National Resistance Movement as its legislator, a capacity in which he has the potential to grab the NRM ticket. Equally, Nambeshe has the capacity to get an appointment as the leader of the opposition by NUP principal. While the constitution allows people to associate politically in any party they choose, whether NRM or FDC, including NUP, the above political piece was intended to explain why a strong legislator like Hon. Nambeshe was left to be picked by the “Kyelondela Tabamubi” singer.

Besides the above reasons for Nambeshe joining NUP, there are other grounds which I will highlight in subsequent editions.
