Bugisu Cultural Institution Warns Hon. Nandala Over Funding of Opposed Groups

Steven Masiga, Expert in International Law

MBALE, Uganda — The spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Steven Masiga, has warned Hon. Nandala to stop providing lunch, breakfast, and other support to groups opposed to the institution’s leadership.

Speaking to Ankole Times from Mbale, Masiga emphasized that the practice of “baby feeding” cultural leaders in Bugisu must end.

He cited a history of Hon. Nandala supporting previous leaders, including Umukuka I, who was placed on the payroll under the Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU); Umukuka Mushikor, who received accommodation and financial support; and the self-styled Umukuka Wagabyalire, who was heavily funded, though the support did not legitimize his position.

Masiga noted that when it comes to His Highness Umukuka III, Jude Mike Mudoma, Hon. Nandala has failed to provide any such “baby formula” support. He added that Umukuka Jude Mike Mudoma was already a man of means with several properties before being gazetted, and that combined with government funding, this has reportedly frustrated Hon. Nandala.

The spokesperson further accused Hon. Nandala of recently funding groups opposed to Bugisu cultural leadership, including providing fuel and facilitating the delivery of letters to government offices criticizing the institution. During a recent burial in Bududa of the late Titus Nangalama, Masiga claimed, Hon. Nandala again pledged support to subversive groups, promising fuel and other assistance.

“As a cultural institution, we warn Hon. Nandala to stay away from matters concerning Bugisu leadership. We will not allow him to determine who the legitimate Umukuka of Bugisu is,” Masiga stated. “We openly reject and refuse your ‘baby formula’ feeds, take them to those who are truly needy. Government funding is sufficient for Bugisu cultural affairs.”
