Our Reporter, Mbale City – The Inzu Yamasaba cultural leader has announced that the institution intends to plant over 2.5 million trees in the Elgon region. The Umukuka made these remarks while addressing his subjects in Sironko during International World Environment Day and while receiving a team from Centenary Bank at the Maluku offices.
The spokesperson for Inzu Yamasaba, Steven Masiga, emphasized that the tree planting initiatives in the Elgon region should be well funded and supported by the Masaba communities in both Kenya and Uganda. He noted that this effort would benefit districts neighboring Mount Elgon, including parts of Kitale, Trans-Nzoia, and Bungoma in Kenya, as well as the Bugisu and Sebei regions in Uganda.
The Umukuka will be leading a delegation of Ugandan Bamasaba to Kenya at the invitation of the Bamasaba Kenyan chapter. More detailed plans will be shared with the media after the Bungoma tour, Mr. Masiga stressed.
Mr. Masiga also stated that a significant number of people in the Elgon region, especially in the districts of Bududa, have been relocated to distant places like Kiryandongo. The trees being planted will serve as environmental mitigators, and in the future, there may be no need to relocate anyone, allowing people to stay in their ancestral homes.
The intervention by Inzu Yamasaba leaders aims to halt the issues of migration in the Elgon region. Below is a photo of Umukuka III and his team.
