HOIMA – The Bunyoro Kitara Diocese has announced the establishment of Hoima Archdeaconry, a significant milestone aimed at strengthening pastoral ministry, improving church administration and expanding evangelism across the region.
The announcement was made by the Bishop of Bunyoro Kitara Diocese, Rt. Rev. Jacob Ateirweho Amooti, during a confirmation service held at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Duhaga, on Sunday.
The new archdeaconry has been carved out of St. Peter’s Cathedral Deanery and will officially begin operations on 1st January 2027, with its headquarters at St. Stephen’s Church of Uganda, Karongo.
Bishop Ateirweho said the restructuring is intended to bring church leadership and services closer to the faithful while enhancing the diocese’s capacity to meet the growing pastoral and administrative needs of its congregations. He noted that St. Peter’s Cathedral, Duhaga, will continue to operate as a deanery under the leadership of the Cathedral Chapter in accordance with the Constitution of the Church of Uganda.
As part of the restructuring, the bishop announced several appointments and transfers that will take effect on January 1, 2027. The Very Rev. Canon Eric Twine Amooti will continue serving as the Dean of St. Peter’s Cathedral Deanery, while Rev. Joshua Muhanuzi, currently the Vicar of St. Peter’s Cathedral, has been promoted and appointed the inaugural Archdeacon of Hoima Archdeaconry. He will also serve as the Vicar of St. Stephen’s Church, Karongo.
Rev. Daniel Tumwesige, who has been serving as Assistant Vicar of St. Peter’s Cathedral, has been promoted to the position of Vicar of the cathedral. Meanwhile, Rev. Hillary Kansiime Ateenyi, formerly the Parish Priest of Karongo Parish, has been transferred to St. Peter’s Cathedral as Assistant Vicar.
Under the new administrative structure, St. Peter’s Cathedral Deanery will comprise St. Peter’s Cathedral Parish, All Saints City Parish, Katikara Parish, Bwikya Parish, Mparo Parish, Butanjwa Parish and Butema Parish.
The newly created Hoima Archdeaconry will consist of Karongo Parish, which will serve as its headquarters, together with Bugambe, Kiduuma, Parajwoki, Kitoba, Buhamba and Buseruka parishes.
Church leaders say the establishment of the archdeaconry is expected to improve coordination of ministry, strengthen evangelism, enhance pastoral care and bring church services closer to Christians across the diocese.
The confirmation service was attended by the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, who welcomed the creation of the new archdeaconry and pledged continued support for its activities.
Asiimwe announced a Shs15 million contribution towards the purchase of a ministry vehicle to facilitate pastoral work and outreach programmes.
“We thank God for the new developments in the diocese, and we are ready to serve alongside the newly posted clergy,” Asiimwe said.
The establishment of Hoima Archdeaconry marks a major step in the continued growth of the Bunyoro Kitara Diocese, reflecting the Church’s commitment to strengthening its structures and improving service delivery to its growing Christian community.
