A ban on the trade, transportation, and consumption of animals in Kabarole District came into effect following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). The ban, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, is a response to the uncontrolled movement of animals during the festive season, which leaders in Kabarole attribute to the spread of FMD.

Dr Henry Mulondo, the district veterinary officer, confirmed that laboratory tests confirmed the presence of FMD after animals exhibited symptoms. Out of the initial 17 cases, 16 were traced to a single farm, raising concerns about potential additional cases. The district, home to 35,000 cattle, has requested 24,000 doses of vaccines from the government for targeted vaccination in hotspot areas.

The ban, effective since January 19, includes the closure of livestock markets, slaughterhouses, butcheries, and loading grounds. Mr Festus Bandeeba, the Kabarole Resident District Commissioner, emphasized strict adherence to the quarantine directive, stating that it would only be lifted when new FMD cases cease.

Enforcement teams are in place at all levels to ensure compliance. Farmers are urged to report animals showing FMD symptoms, disinfect all farm visitors, and limit visitation. Dr Abigaba Silvatory, the Kabarole District production and marketing officer, noted that the city of Fort Portal, supplied by the district, might be placed under quarantine, emphasizing the need to engage city leadership to prevent further spread.

While the measures aim to control the outbreak, concerns have been raised about the impact on businesses. Some farmers and butcher operators expressed worries about the restrictions affecting their livelihoods.
