The Police in Uganda’s Kween district are investigating a fire that destroyed a 20-acre sugarcane farm owned by Mitsobishi Agriculture Company on December 28, 2023. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
The company’s director, Ali Akhtar, disclosed that the economic cost of the destruction is significant, estimating a loss of about sh200 million. The fire has left the once-thriving sugarcane farm in ruins, with concerns about the financial impact, damage to equipment, infrastructure, and potential long-term effects on soil quality.
Despite the efforts of firefighters, the intense blaze overwhelmed them, resulting in over 20 acres of sugarcane reduced to ashes. Video footage captured the thick, dark clouds of smoke as the fire consumed everything in its path.
This devastating incident marks the third time in a year that Mitsobishi Agriculture Company has faced fire-related incidents, raising concerns and highlighting the challenges they are dealing with.
Preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire are underway, with Fredmark Chesang, the Sipi Police spokesperson, stating that local authorities and fire investigators are scrutinizing various pointers to determine the exact cause.
Hope Atuhaire, the resident district commissioner, emphasized collaboration with Mitsobishi Agriculture Company to assess damages and explore avenues for support and recovery. Security measures, including officers from the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF), have been deployed to protect the farm.
The community surrounding the farm has shown solidarity with the investor, offering condolences and assistance. Wilson Chemutai, a resident near the farm, expressed hope for the investor’s strength and support to rebuild and restore the once-thriving sugarcane farm, which has operated for the last five years, employing over 60 Ugandans.
