Bukedea, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially launched the construction of the Teso Animal Breeding and Demonstration Centre in Bukedea District. The project, being undertaken by the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB), marks another milestone in government efforts to boost livestock productivity across Uganda.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on this week, President Museveni emphasized the importance of modernizing agriculture and improving livestock breeds to increase farmers’ incomes. He noted that the new centre will bring breeding services closer to farmers in the Teso sub-region and beyond.

The Teso Animal Breeding and Demonstration Centre will serve as a hub for producing high-quality animal genetics and promoting best practices in animal husbandry. It will provide training, demonstration, and extension services to farmers, helping them adopt improved breeding technologies that can enhance milk and meat production.

According to NAGRC&DB, the centre will also implement community-based breeding programs. These programs are designed to make quality semen, liquid nitrogen, and other breeding materials more accessible to local farmers. By doing so, the government aims to strengthen livestock development, improve animal health, and increase the overall productivity of Uganda’s livestock sector.

The initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to transforming agriculture from subsistence to commercial levels. With better breeds and improved farming techniques, farmers in the Teso sub-region are expected to benefit from higher yields, better-quality animals, and increased household incomes.

In addition to breeding activities, the centre will serve as a demonstration site where farmers can learn practical methods of managing livestock, feeding, and disease control. This hands-on approach will encourage farmers to adopt modern technologies and practices that have already proven successful in other regions.

The establishment of the Teso Animal Breeding and Demonstration Centre represents a step forward in realizing Uganda’s vision for a modern and sustainable agricultural sector — one that empowers communities, enhances food security, and supports economic growth.
