In Butaleja, where the winds of change have often carried whispers of hope and resilience, the community mourns the loss of Hon. Ssegirinya Muhammad, a man whose life embodied the spirit of service and selflessness.
Moses Lyada, National Unity Platform’s (NUP) mobilizer in Butaleja district and a former parliamentary flagbearer for Bunyole West, has joined countless others in paying tribute to Segirinya’s legacy.
Drawing from his personal experience, Lyada described Ssegirinya as a man of the people, one who always stood on the side of the downtrodden. “We were both part of the pioneer NUP flag bearers, the initial #PeoplePower cadres from 2018,” Lyada shared. “While I wasn’t too close to him, his actions spoke louder than words. He treated everyone, even those of us who lost elections, with immense respect, a rare quality among politicians.”
Ssegirinya’s practical approach to leadership stood out. He initiated the Segi Saving Box, a program aimed at providing loans and savings for his constituents.
Despite his modest means, he built a medical facility, purchased ambulances, and supported widows and orphans. “He might not have spoken much in Parliament, but his deeds spoke volumes,” Lyada remarked.
Lyada also recalled Ssegirinya’s dedication to comrades in the struggle. He narrated an incident when NUP members, including their Secretary General, were detained at Kiira Road Police Station. “We were needed at court, and Ssegirinya was already there, mobilizing funds for bail. His readiness to step in and help was unmatched.”
Reflecting on Ssegirinya’s legacy, Lyada urged all to honor his famous mantra, “FightHarder,” rather than merely saying “Rest in Peace.” He also called on the government, security agencies, and Parliament to uphold the rule of law, ensuring fairness for all.
“In life, Ssegirinya inspired us to believe in ourselves, just as BobiWine has done. He showed us that even hustlers can achieve greatness through determination and service,” Lyada concluded.
As Butaleja mourns, the words of an old proverb ring true, that “A good tree shelters many birds.” Ssegirinya Muhammad was indeed a shelter for the needy, and his absence leaves a gap that will not easily be filled.
I remember during his detention times , I joined the comrade Grace of Rakai to have a press conference threatening to demonstrate
Yes for sure, he died young but had a character like that of Honorable Lyadda Moses. Reaching the grassroots.
