Over the weekend, more than 50 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Mbarara City made a significant move by joining the National Resistance Movement (NRM) after expressing their dissatisfaction with the NUP’s actions.

Aisha Uwamahoro, who had been a leading mobilizer for NUP in Nyamitanga, explained that they decided to rejoin the NRM after feeling that they had been misled and received unfulfilled promises from NUP. In a formal ceremony, they handed over their NUP membership cards to Mbarara City NRM registrar Kaweesa Patrick and received NRM party cards.

The reception of these defectors took place at Mbarara Independence Park during the launch of the Mbarara City NRM Mobilizers group, coinciding with the celebration of 10 years of mobilization for the NRM. The event saw the enthusiastic participation of various NRM leaders, including Mbarara City NRM chairperson Wilson Tumwine, Mbarara Resident City Commissioner Lt. Col James Mwesigye, and Greater Mbarara NRM Office of National Chairman co-coordinator Muhangi Zephline.

Defense and Veteran Affairs Minister, Vincent Ssempijja, who was the chief guest at the gathering, commended the Mbarara City NRM mobilizers for their commitment to attracting supporters from other political parties. He emphasized the importance of political parties focusing on presenting their programs to the public and promoting healthy competition.

Ssempijja called for unity among political parties, stressing that antagonism and hostility only delay the process of identifying the best leaders to serve the nation. He encouraged all parties to select their leadership based on merit and to compete by presenting their manifestos for the public to evaluate.

Aisha Bukenya, leader of the Mbarara City NRM Mobilizers group, acknowledged that mobilizers from upcountry regions often face challenges related to facilitation. Muhangi, representing Hajjat Uzeiye Hadijah Namyalo, assured the group of her office’s support, including a self-empowerment campaign and financial assistance through their SACCO account.

Lt. Col James Mwesigye urged Ugandans to focus on income-generating projects rather than relying on government financial support. He emphasized that NRM cadres, like evangelists, work diligently without immediate monetary rewards, with the promise of recognition for their dedication and services at a later time. Mwesigye encouraged individuals to take advantage of the country’s peaceful environment for financial progress.
