LIRA, Uganda —   The construction of a satellite laboratory at Lira Regional Referral Hospital is nearing completion, marking a significant step forward in improving healthcare access in the Lango sub-region.

The laboratory, funded by the Uganda COVID-19 Emergency Response and Preparedness Project, is valued at over 4 billion Ugandan shillings. It is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

During a media tour on Thursday, Peter Odeke, the Principal Hospital Administrator, expressed enthusiasm for the project. He highlighted the need for a ward complex to accommodate the growing demand for healthcare services.

Doreen Nshabohurira, the communication officer for the project, explained that the satellite laboratory will play a crucial role in boosting healthcare services in Northern Uganda. It will enable early detection and diagnosis of various diseases, allowing for quicker and more effective treatment.

The new facility will feature specialized areas such as Microbiology, TB, Tissue Examination, Immunology, Serology, and Hematology, focusing on blood-related issues.

Nshabohurira encouraged locals to take advantage of this new resource and prioritize their health.

Peter Odeke emphasized the importance of this project in making healthcare more accessible to the community. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the hospital due to limited space and capacity.

Stakeholders in the Lango sub-region have expressed their satisfaction with the progress of the laboratory construction. Alex Owera, a councilor from Agwata sub-county in Dokolo, stated that the new lab will significantly enhance access to healthcare services in the region.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital was established in 1928 and upgraded to a regional referral hospital in 2003. It has since undergone infrastructure expansion to meet the growing needs of the community.
