Peter Luzinda | ALEBTONG, Uganda — The Anti-Corruption Court sitting in Nakasero has re-summoned two senior officials from Alebtong District to answer charges related to the alleged loss of more than Shs165 million in public funds.
According to court records, the officials are accused of causing financial loss to the government through the irregular authorization and payment of funds to a private construction company. The payments, amounting to over Shs165 million, were allegedly processed in violation of established financial management procedures governing local governments.
Prosecution contends that the payments were made without proper verification of the works claimed to have been carried out by the construction firm, resulting in a financial loss to the government. Investigators believe the funds were released irregularly and without adequate accountability.
The Nakasero-based Anti-Corruption Court reissued the summons after the two officials reportedly failed to appear before the court as earlier directed.
The court has now ordered them to appear and respond to the charges as investigations and prosecution of the case continue.
If convicted, the officials could face penalties under Uganda’s anti-corruption laws, which criminalize actions by public officers that lead to financial loss to the government through negligence, abuse of office, or failure to follow proper procedures.
The Anti-Corruption Court, a specialized division of the judiciary, handles cases involving misuse of public resources and abuse of office by public officials across the country.
The matter is expected to come up for further proceedings once the summoned officials appear before the court.
