Former senior police officer Nixon Agasirwe and Abdunoor Ssemujju, also known as Minana, have been committed to the High Court to stand trial over the 2015 murder of Joan Kagezi, the former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions.

The two were committed after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) informed the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court that investigations into the case are complete. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nickson Agasiirwe and Ssemujju will now face trial at the High Court, which has jurisdiction over capital offences.

According to investigators, Agasirwe is accused of playing a central role in the planning of the murder. The prosecution alleges that he provided firearms, intelligence and funding used in the operation. It is further alleged that his conduct after the killing raised suspicion.

Court documents state that Agasirwe took charge of the murder investigations shortly after Kagezi was killed. During this time, he allegedly seized her laptop and files and later recovered her missing mobile phone — actions investigators say surprised those involved in the probe.

The indictment also reveals that a day before her death, Kagezi expressed fear for her life during an official meeting. She reportedly told colleagues that she believed Agasirwe and others intended to kill her.

Joan Kagezi was shot dead on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb, as she was driving home with her children. At the time of her death, she was leading the prosecution of several high-profile terrorism and murder cases.

The High Court is expected to take over the matter and set dates for plea taking and trial proceedings.
