Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) Richard Buteera has called upon lawyers to promote the practice of mediation in their handling of disputes. This appeal was made during a courtesy call by members of the Female Lawyers Network (FLN) to the Court of Appeal in Kampala on October 31, 2023.

The purpose of FLN’s visit was not only to acquaint DCJ Buteera with their organization’s activities but also to extend an invitation to the end-of-year dinner scheduled for December 9, 2023, at Hotel Africana in Kampala, as revealed on the Judiciary’s Twitter account, formerly known as Judiciary X.

Highlighting the benefits of mediation in expeditiously resolving disputes, Deputy Chief Justice Buteera emphasized the importance of mentoring lawyers. He underscored that this guidance can ensure proper communication, good governance, and the effective delivery of justice. According to Buteera, this mentorship not only serves the legal community but also protects the interests of the public.

FLN President Joyce Nalunga Birimumaaso pointed out that the promotion of mediation has led to more rapid trials and increased efficiency in the legal process. She commended the efforts of the Judiciary, which has introduced various initiatives such as mediation, resulting in the swifter resolution of cases. This, in turn, reduces the length of trials and encourages the use of mediation as an effective dispute resolution method.

In addition to discussing the merits of mediation, Nalunga expressed her gratitude to DCJ Buteera for his inclusive and open-minded leadership. She acknowledged his support in fostering an environment where individuals can freely express their concerns. FLN’s commitment is to empower women and facilitate their involvement in the legal field. As a symbol of this dedication, Nalunga extended an invitation to Deputy Chief Justice Buteera to participate in their forthcoming dinner. The event serves as a testament to their mission of making a positive impact on women lawyers and promoting gender diversity in the legal profession.
