Nobert Mao, the President General of the Democratic Party (DP) and Uganda’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, has urged Ugandans to reject lawlessness and political activism as means of achieving a long-awaited transition in the country. Speaking during a weekly press conference at City House in Kampala, Mao emphasized the importance of focusing on hope and the renewal of societal values for restoring the rule of law and constitutionalism.

In his Christmas and End of Year message, Mao quoted the biblical verse Isaiah 9:6-7, emphasizing the promise of Jesus Christ’s birth and its significance in bringing peace and justice to the world. He called on Ugandans to remain committed to unchanging values and the Constitution, urging constructive engagement and proposing a national dialogue, agenda for national reconciliation, constitutional reforms, and a three-phase transition plan towards a peaceful transition.

Acknowledging skepticism surrounding DP’s proposals, Mao argued that Christianity has not failed but has not been fully applied. He urged individuals to put the national interest at the center of their actions, unlocking the blessings promised by Jesus Christ’s birth through the application of His teachings.

Addressing concerns about the recent fire at City House, the DP headquarters, Mao assured party members that the DP-NRM cooperation agreement, signed with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government and President Yoweri Museveni at State House, remains intact. While there were fears that the party’s property was destroyed in the fire, Mao clarified that the DP office was minimally affected, with water from the fire brigade being the primary concern.
