The Kampala City Hall Court has sentenced 27-year-old security guard Moris Eyit to community service after he was found guilty of defacing campaign posters belonging to NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The court further warned that any failure to comply with the community service order will see him serve two weeks in Luzira Prison.
Eyit was arrested last week after he was allegedly seen tearing down posters of the incumbent president in the city. According to prosecution, the security guard pulled down several posters and damaged them, seemingly forgetting that Museveni still holds office as the sitting Head of State. He was later charged with defacement of campaign materials, an offense under Section 80 of the Presidential Elections Act.
Eyit appeared before the City Hall Court where he admitted to the act. In delivering the sentence, the magistrate emphasized the importance of respecting campaign regulations, especially during an election season marked by heightened political activity.
This case comes at a time when authorities have increased monitoring of election-related misconduct across both physical public spaces and online platforms. Several individuals have recently been arrested over content shared on social media, particularly remarks deemed to attack or insult the First Family. Security agencies have cautioned the public to exercise restraint and adhere to the laws governing political expression as the country moves closer to the January 15, 2026 polls.
The Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies continue to remind citizens that political competition must be conducted with respect, tolerance, and lawful engagement.
