The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has issued a statement denouncing alleged threats directed towards Dr. Jim Spire Ssentongo and a group of social media activists who have been advocating for accountability from leaders in Parliament.

In their weekend statement, the lawyers urged the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the origin of these purported threats. They emphasized the importance of safeguarding citizens’ rights to demand accountability from holders of public office within a democratic framework.

The ULS statement, signed by president Bernard Oundo, condemns the intimidation tactics employed to silence the calls for accountability. It calls for swift action to identify and hold accountable those responsible for making such threats, reaffirming that in any democracy, citizens have the right to demand transparency and accountability from their leaders.

Dr. Ssentongo, in a post on his social media account, expressed concern over the monitoring of his communications and movements, attributing it to his efforts to shed light on accountability issues within Parliament. He lamented the perceived threats to his safety, highlighting the importance of addressing impunity and abuse of citizens, irrespective of political affiliations.

Dr. Ssentongo’s activism has centered around what he terms ‘exhibitions,’ where he and fellow activists scrutinize various government agencies, ministries, and departments, exposing allegations of neglect, corruption, and mismanagement. The recent focus of their efforts has been the #UgandaParliamentExhibition, which aimed to uncover instances of alleged mismanagement within Parliament.

According to ULS, the advocacy efforts led by Dr. Ssentongo and his collaborators underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. By shining a light on perceived shortcomings and holding public officials accountable, they contribute to fostering a culture of accountability and integrity within Uganda’s democratic framework.
