The Senior Resident Judge of Masaka High Court, Hon. Lady Justice Victoria Nakintu, led a gathering to assess and enhance mediation practices at Masaka High Court.
Participants at the meeting included Judicial Officers from the Masaka High Court Circuit, court-accredited mediators, and local council leaders who serve as mediators in the broader Masaka area.
The primary objective of this gathering was to evaluate the performance of mediation, identify challenges, and exchange best practices related to mediation.
Hon. Lady Justice Nakintu encouraged Judicial Officers to embrace mediation as a means to promote reconciliation in dispute resolution. She expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice for re-engineering mediation by recalling retired Judicial Officers to serve as mediators in various courts. She shared her experience of resolving a case that had languished in court for over 33 years within just two days through mediation.
Hon. Justice Lawrence Tweyanze, the Resident Judge of Masaka, emphasized the importance of popularizing this initiative and highlighted the need for a change in mindset. He also recounted an instance where a case, pending for seven years in court, was concluded within a few hours through mediation.
HW Erias Kisawuzi, the Registrar of Mediation, expressed his gratitude to the Judges for implementing mediation in their courts. He pledged to organize training sessions for participants as a means to enhance the capacity of those involved in mediation.
This meeting was organized by the Mediation Registry and was moderated by HW Brenda Nakayi.
