Molly Katanga, widow of the late businessman Henry Katanga, has been charged with the murder of her husband in Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court. The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Erias Kakooza, heard that Molly Katanga allegedly shot her husband dead with a pistol on November 2nd, 2023, at their matrimonial home in Mbuya Chwa two road, Nakawa Division, Kampala.

Amidst heavy security, including armed Counter Terrorism police, Molly Katanga was brought to court in a wheelchair, her head and hands bandaged, and her face partly covered by a mask. The court, however, communicated the charges to her, stating that it lacked jurisdiction to conduct the trial.

The Prosecution, led by Jonathan Muwaganya, informed the court that investigations were complete and requested Molly Katanga be committed to the High Court for trial. Molly Katanga’s lawyers, led by Peter Kabatsi, requested continued medical attention for their client, emphasizing her five consecutive injuries.

The defense also sought access to the accused’s home, which has been cordoned off since the incident. The prosecution, unaware of the security details, requested time to consult the Director of CID regarding the scene of the crime, which remains under military guard.

Magistrate Kakooza directed prison officers to ensure Molly Katanga’s doctors have access while in prison. He ruled that the family should not be blocked from accessing their home by security. Molly Katanga was remanded to Luzira Prison until the High Court is ready for her trial.

In a related development, the High Court Criminal Division has set the bail hearing for Molly’s co-accused persons, including her daughters Patricia Kakwanza and Martha Nkwanzi, on January 29, 2024. The co-accused face charges of murder and destroying evidence.
