Nine Suspects Committed to High Court for ADF Terrorism Trial

Wednesday, October 18, 2023

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has committed nine individuals to the High Court to face trial on terrorism charges. The accused persons, who are suspected to be affiliated with the ADF terrorist group, are facing multiple charges, including terrorism, murder, attempted murder, and robbery.

The suspects involved in this case are Moses Katende, Abdul Latif, Adam Goloba, Pyzo Musana, Aida Nakamatte, Rahma Namuganza, Rahuma Namara, Hafuswa Namwase, and one individual known as Kabwiso. They are accused of a series of violent acts, including attacking various government facilities, fuel stations, security guards, and police officers in Central and Eastern Uganda between 2021 and 2023. These attacks resulted in loss of lives, injuries, and damage to property.

The prosecution has declared that the investigations into the charges against the suspects are complete, and there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial in the High Court. Additionally, the State Attorney, Mr. Ivan Kyazze, plans to present evidence demonstrating the suspects’ association with the ADF group, including the recruitment facilitated by women.

Specific allegations against the accused individuals include an attack on the motorcade of Principal Judge Dr. Flavian Zeija on April 23, 2022, at Kalandazi village, Buwama, resulting in vehicle damage. On July 8, 2022, at Kungu village, Matugga, the group allegedly attacked and fatally shot police officer Charles Ogwanga while robbing his gun. On October 31, 2022, at Busiika police station, three police officers, AIP Alex Wagaruka, and police constables Moses Ongol and Steven Odama, were allegedly gunned down by others who are still at large.

The prosecution intends to present evidence from CCTV cameras that aided in the identification of certain suspects during the attack on the police station. They argue that the suspects lack valid defenses for the crimes and will request the court to convict them accordingly.

The trial date for the accused individuals remains uncertain, as they have been remanded to different prisons until the High Court is ready to hear their cases.
