Authorities in Rukungiri District are investigating the mysterious death of a 17-year-old housemaid whose body was discovered hanging from a mango tree in Nyamitooma I Cell, Nyamitooma Ward, Binkurungu Town Council.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 10, 2025. According to Binkurungu Town Council Mayor, Mr. Warren Kajuna, the deceased had recently been employed at the home of a man identified as Mr. Sad Sanyu and had worked there for only two weeks.
She was reported missing on Thursday, August 7, and her body was found three days later in a nearby compound, sparking shock and grief among locals.
Mayor Kajuna revealed that the girl was originally from Karuga-Kayonzya in Kanungu District and had no known relatives in the area. Her identity had not yet been officially confirmed by press time.
Police have since cordoned off the scene and transferred the body to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for a postmortem examination. Residents who gathered at the scene have called for a thorough investigation, with some expressing concern over the conditions under which young girls are employed as domestic workers.
Rukungiri District Police say they are treating the matter with urgency and have recorded statements from several individuals, including the employer. They have urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigative process to take its course.
More details are expected once the postmortem report is released and preliminary investigations are complete.
