Boda Boda Rider in Critical Condition After Alleged Police Torture in Mbarara

MBARARA, Uganda — Police officers attached to Katete Police Station in Mbarara City are facing allegations of torturing a suspect while in custody.

The suspect, Juma Musa, a boda boda rider from Kiyanja, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle from a bar in Katete, Mbarara City.

Musa is currently admitted at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. He alleges that he was beaten and mistreated by officers during interrogation.

According to information, Musa was questioned by the officers on Saturday morning after his arrest and was later tortured.

He is said to have been severely beaten, leaving him in critical condition, which led to his transfer to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

It is further alleged that the Officer in Charge (OC), identified as Opio Luke, has taken responsibility for some of the medical bills after realizing the seriousness of the situation.

Reports also indicate that a police officer identified as Agaba is being linked to the alleged torture incident.

Police have not yet issued an official statement on the matter, and investigations are expected to continue.
