A series of family misunderstandings in the Lango Sub-region of Uganda have resulted in numerous fatalities, with at least three recorded cases in the past three weeks, according to the Daily Monitor.
In a recent incident on January 3, 2024, a 15-year-old boy allegedly murdered his 52-year-old father, Charles Aliro, in Apac District after a heated argument. The juvenile suspect, who had returned home from school in Kampala to celebrate the festive season, reportedly struck his father with a baton, causing his immediate death.
Another case involves a 25-year-old man arrested for allegedly killing his wife’s lover on New Year’s Day in Apac District. The suspect, suspicious of the deceased’s relationship with his wife, assaulted him, leading to severe injuries. The victim later succumbed to his injuries on January 2.
In a separate incident on January 5, a man is wanted by the police for allegedly murdering his 30-year-old wife in Apac. The suspect, who had reconciled with his wife after a period of separation, reportedly attacked her with a machete while they were cutting trees to make charcoal.
The North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Patrick Jimmy Okema, confirmed these incidents, highlighting the disturbing trend of family-related violence in the region.
The Annual Police Crime Report of 2022 reveals that North Kyoga registered the highest crime rate among 15 police regions in Uganda, with 17,605 cases recorded in 2022. The report also indicates that the region had high instances of assault, gender-based violence, and arson.
