Alcohol Abuse Among Men in Acholi Region Draws Attention from Local Leaders

Thursday, October 12, 2023

Local government leaders in the Acholi Sub-region are discussing the issue of low productivity among men, which they attribute to excessive alcohol consumption. A meeting of leaders highlighted the growing problem of alcoholism among men in the region, emphasizing its adverse effects on health and socio-economic development.

This concern was brought to light during the Doro Paco Initiative Meeting in Gulu City, organized by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo and Former Uganda People’s Congress Party President Olara Otunu. The meeting aimed to engage local government and youth leaders from across the Acholi sub-region in finding solutions to the region’s pressing issues.

Emmanuel Orach, the Nwoya District Chairperson, pointed out that a significant number of men, both young and old, in the sub-region spend their valuable time in bars consuming alcohol, neglecting their responsibilities. This not only impacts the health of those involved but also hinders the region’s development by reducing their productivity.

Nabinson Kidega Nok, the Agago Resident District Commissioner, suggested that the deliberate sale of potent alcohol is undermining the hard work of men. He highlighted that excessive alcohol consumption has led to health issues, including abnormal weight gain and swollen cheeks.

Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo emphasized the need for innovative solutions to address the challenges facing the Acholi Sub-region. He noted the changes in social behavior, such as women openly drinking and youths participating in gambling during the farming season, which were previously uncommon.

Dr. Olara Otunnu stressed that resolving the current dilemmas is crucial to preserving the good image and integrity of the Acholi people.

To address alcoholism, Gulu City Council Deputy Mayor Christine Olok suggested the introduction of a bylaw to regulate early morning drinking and alcohol sales to men.

Additionally, leaders at the meeting highlighted other challenges faced by the sub-region, including high poverty rates, the sale of land, teenage pregnancy, poor academic performance, and high bride prices, which discourage many men from marrying.

Notably, in November 2016, Gulu District Council passed the Alcohol Drinks Ordinance, aimed at regulating drinking hours and alcohol consumption. The ordinance also banned the sale of potent gin in plastic bottles below 250 ml.
