Five Arrested Over Violent Motorcycle Theft Syndicate in Kampala

KAMPALA, Uganda – Police have arrested five suspected robbers accused of orchestrating a series of violent motorcycle thefts across the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) area.

The suspects have been identified as Benard Ndaula alias Twine, Sulaiman Sekatawa, Joseph Nakana, Herbert Kabugho, and George Kalatungye. By late Friday, the five were still detained at Katwe Police Station as investigations continue.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the arrests stemmed from a complaint filed on February 16, 2026, by a one Mukasa, who reported the theft of his motorcycle, registration number UGE 242Y (Bajaj Boxer).

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mukasa had entrusted his motorcycle to Benard Ndaula to operate. Ndaula later returned and claimed that unknown individuals had stolen the motorcycle from him. However, upon interrogation, Ndaula allegedly confessed to staging the theft with the help of his accomplices.

His confession led to an intelligence-led operation in Makindye I Parish, Makindye Division, where four additional suspects were arrested.

During the operation, police recovered a suspected stolen motorcycle and a motorcycle engine believed to have been dismantled for resale.

Further investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly targeted victims by posing as boda boda riders. They reportedly lured unsuspecting riders or clients to dark and isolated areas before robbing them of their motorcycles.

Kawala said police records show that some of the suspects have previously been arrested and prosecuted for similar offences and have been in and out of prison.

Police have assured the public that operations against motorcycle theft syndicates in the Kampala Metropolitan area will continue as investigations into the case progress.
