A gang armed with machetes attempted to break into the residence of former Kawempe South Division MP, Mubarak Munyagwa in an overnight incident. The attempted aggravated robbery was foiled by a swift response from the Nsangi Territorial Police, preventing the assailants from gaining access to Munyagwa’s home.
The incident occurred on January 3, around 3 am, at Munyagwa’s residence in Kimbejja Cell, Budo Ward, Kyengera Town Council. Benjamin Mpaka, Munyagwa’s security guard, sustained a head injury from a sharp object while trying to block the criminals. He was promptly transported to Mulago Hospital for treatment.
Contrary to social media rumors, the police clarified that there was no on-scene shooting during the foiled robbery. Munyagwa’s timely reporting and the rapid response of the police patrol team played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of life and property.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the police introduced K9 units to the scene after the attack. However, their efforts were hindered by heavy rainfall. A suspect attempting to flee the scene in a Datsun pick-up with registration number UAK 182A was apprehended. The arrested suspect is currently in custody, assisting ongoing police investigations.
Police commended Munyagwa for promptly reporting the incident, enabling an effective response to prevent further harm. The incident adds to the rising trend of robberies, as indicated in the 2022 annual police crime report. A total of 6,854 robbery cases were reported in 2022, marking a 29.9% increase from the 5,275 cases reported in 2021.
The report specified that 4,338 cases involved robberies without the use of lethal weapons, while 2,516 cases were aggravated robberies with the use of firearms and machetes. As of the end of 2022, out of the total reported robbery cases, 1,831 were taken to court, 224 were abandoned, and 4,799 are still under inquiry.
