Fort Portal City Police Detain 20-Year-Old Woman for Stealing Newborn from Hospital

Fort Portal City authorities have apprehended a 20-year-old woman accused of stealing a newborn baby from the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital. The suspect, a resident of Rwengoma ‘A’1, Rwengoma ward, central Division Fort Portal City, is currently in police custody.

The incident occurred on the night of January 10, 2024, around 9 pm, as Ms. Akugizibwe Consolate, the mother of the child, was admitted to the maternity ward at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital for childbirth. She was accompanied by her caretaker, Ms. Agnes Katumwine. During this time, an unknown woman, posing as a concerned citizen, allegedly approached and stole the newborn while the caretaker was briefly away searching for food.




The arrest was confirmed by Mr. Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson. The suspect is now facing charges related to the alleged baby theft.




Investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the incident and to ensure a thorough understanding of the circumstances surrounding the baby’s disappearance from the hospital.
