Authorities in Uganda have charged 28-year-old Yoramu Baguma with multiple offenses following a dramatic incident at a political rally in Kampala. Baguma faces three counts: assault, disobedience of lawful orders, and intent to alarm, annoy, or ridicule the person of the President.
The incident occurred at Mbogo Playgrounds in Kawempe during a campaign event for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Faridah Nambi. President Yoweri Museveni was addressing supporters when Baguma suddenly emerged from the crowd, leaped over security barriers, and sprinted directly toward the President.
Security personnel from the Special Forces Command (SFC), responsible for the President’s protection, quickly intervened. They subdued and detained Baguma before he could reach Museveni. Eyewitnesses described the moment as tense, with some initially fearing a possible assassination attempt.
Following his arrest, Baguma was taken into SFC custody, where he has remained during an ongoing interrogation. Investigators are reportedly trying to determine whether he acted alone or was sent by someone with malicious intent toward the President.
This incident has sparked concern about the security of high-profile political events in the country, particularly as Uganda gears up for crucial by-elections. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and to respect security protocols at all public gatherings.
Baguma is expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue. His motive remains unclear, but officials stress that any threat to national leaders will be treated with the utmost seriousness.
