Since January 19, Ibanda District has been grappling with an anthrax outbreak, leading to stringent quarantine measures to contain the spread of the disease. However, the enforcement of these restrictions took a violent turn when a 50-year-old butcher, identified as Kelesensio Mwesigye, reportedly attacked a 34-year-old policeman named Justus Najuna.
The incident occurred as Najuna and his colleagues were carrying out enforcement activities to prevent the illegal slaughter and distribution of meat, which could potentially exacerbate the anthrax and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks in the district.
According to Ibanda police in charge, Oumo Cooper, the police team received information about unauthorized animal slaughtering activities in Mabonwa and promptly responded. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers identified themselves and attempted to apprehend the suspects peacefully. However, one suspect, later identified as Mwesigye, attacked Najuna with a knife, causing severe injuries to the officer’s neck.
Fortunately, another officer, PC Okello Mondry, intervened by firing a shot that wounded Mwesigye in the thigh, allowing Najuna to be rescued from further harm. Both Mwesigye and Najuna were subsequently admitted to Ruhoko Health Centre IV for medical treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, collecting evidence such as meat, knives, and pangas from the scene. Ibanda RDC Caleb Tukaikiriza expressed dismay over the incident, emphasizing the need for accountability and adherence to government regulations.
Tukaikiriza underscored the seriousness of the situation, highlighting that Mwesigye would face legal repercussions for both violating quarantine laws and assaulting a law enforcement officer. He reiterated the importance of cooperation in combating the spread of diseases like foot and mouth disease and anthrax, warning of continued crackdowns on those who flout regulations.
