The director of Kisugu High School, Celestine Kasolo, is currently under detention at Kabalaga Police Station. This action by the authorities follows allegations of unlawfully confining five Senior Four students during the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.
The incident took place on October 26, 2023, and was brought to light by the Kampala Metropolitan Police. According to Luke Oweyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the students’ confinement was linked to unpaid school fees and allegations of unruly behavior.
The five affected students have been identified as Ojiambo Robert, Almahad Sadiq, Onyango Calvin, Orionzi Nicholas, and Mandiko Simon Peter. The police have taken the allegations seriously, and the school director, Celestine Kasolo, is expected to appear in court to address the accusations.
This incident has raised concerns in the community, especially during the ongoing UCE examinations, which are now in their third week. The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has been meticulously preparing for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), scheduled to commence on November 7, 2023.
According to Jennifer Kalule Musamba, the spokesperson for UNEB, candidates have been diligently completing their mandatory subjects, with English Papers 1 and 2 marking the final stages of the UCE exams. Musamba commended the public for their commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examinations and the success of the whistle blower’s policy.
This policy, which encourages individuals to report malpractice, has been instrumental in exposing cases of unauthorized distribution of UNEB examination materials. Those involved in the unauthorized possession and electronic vending of purported PLE papers have faced legal action as a result of information provided by whistle blowers.
