A 19 year old security guard from Kampala has been charged with attempted murder and causing grievous harm, following an incident that took place in Kiwatule. Godwin Tumushabe, a resident of Bukoto in Kampala, appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates’ Court on October 15, 2024, to face the charges.

The charges were read to Tumushabe by Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayiizi, who informed him of his right to apply for bail. Tumushabe, however, denied the accusations against him. According to Ugandan law, attempted murder is a serious crime under Section 187 of the Penal Code Act, CAP 128. If convicted, it carries a potential life imprisonment sentence. The second charge, doing grievous harm, is also a serious offense under Section 202 of the Penal Code Act.

The state prosecutor, Viola Tusingwire, explained to the court that the investigations into the case were still ongoing. In light of this, Chief Magistrate Kayiizi remanded Tumushabe to Luzira Prison and set October 24, 2024, as the date for the next mention of the case.

The prosecution alleges that on September 21, 2024, at Kiwatule, Tumushabe attempted to cause the death of a woman, Syliva Ainomugisha. In addition, he is accused of causing grievous harm to another individual, Abdullah Kantongole, at the same time and place. The specific details of what led to the alleged attack have not been disclosed, and the court will further examine the facts as the case proceeds.

As of now, Tumushabe remains in custody while awaiting his next court appearance, where the case is expected to be updated with any new findings from the ongoing investigations.
