The Kampala Metropolitan Police are making investigations into a shooting incident in the Katwe area that  ended the lives of two individuals. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, February 19, 2024, has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a thorough investigation by local authorities.

The deceased have been identified as Cpl Andebo Collins, a member of the Military Police stationed at Makindye Military Police, and Atulinda Peroni, who was employed as civilian support staff within the same military division. It has been revealed that the pair had a romantic relationship in the past and cohabited in Lusaka Zone, Makindye 1, within the Makindye Division, before their separation due to undisclosed misunderstandings.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the fatal encounter unfolded early in the morning at around 07:00 hours. Cpl Collins, armed and dressed in civilian clothes, reportedly confronted Ms. Peroni as she was getting onto a motorcycle. During this confrontation, Collins used his AK-47 rifle to shoot Peroni, severely injuring her arm before tragically turning the weapon on himself. Both individuals were rushed to different hospitals, but sadly, they were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

The police and Military Police responded promptly to the incident, securing the scene and initiating a comprehensive investigation into the tragic event. The initial findings suggest that the couple had been experiencing relationship troubles for approximately five years leading up to this tragic incident.

In addition to recovering the firearm used in the shooting, police have also collected 13 cartridges from the scene as part of their evidence gathering. Witnesses have been interviewed, and their statements are being used to piece together the events that led to this tragic outcome.

This incident marks the second crime of passion within the Kampala area in less than 24 hours. In a separate but equally unfortunate event, a policewoman was arrested for the alleged murder of her lover at the Luzira Prison Barracks. These consecutive incidents of violence related to personal relationships have raised concerns about domestic violence and the handling of personal firearms.
