The Police are currently investigating a suspected murder case following a shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 7, around 1:30 am.
The tragic event unfolded at the Munyonyo roundabout, near Kagwa Bridge, on the Entebbe Expressway, located in Makindye Sabagabo, Wakiso district, as stated by the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.
According to Onyango, the victim, identified as 34-year-old Francis Masembe from Kajjansi, Wakiso district, lost his life after sustaining a gunshot wound.
An altercation began around 12:30 am when Masembe, accompanied by his wife Eunice Orishaba, his sister Sarah Wanyana, and family friend Godfrey Odeke, stopped by the roadside with their motorcycles. They were reportedly discussing how to safely transport the intoxicated Masembe home.
“The situation took a tragic turn when an occupant of a black BMW with registration number UBM 300M, later identified as Isaac Ssali, accused them of being robbers,” Onyango said.
A brief confrontation ensued, during which Ssali allegedly fired a fatal shot at Masembe, resulting in his death upon arrival at Kiruddu Hospital.
According to Onyango, Police quickly responded to the scene, where detectives conducted investigations and recovered the murder weapon. Subsequently, Ssali was arrested.
Eyewitness accounts, including Masembe’s sister, Wanyana, revealed that the deceased had been intoxicated and had a disagreement with his wife before the altercation. It was also reported that the suspect engaged in arguments with Masembe.
Additionally, 12 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the scene.
According to Onyango, the deceased’s wife, Orishaba, confirmed Masembe’s state of inebriation, stating that he was unable to continue riding his motorcycle, which led to their roadside stop before the fatal encounter.
Further examinations indicated that the projectile remained lodged in Masembe’s body. The suspect presented a firearm certificate according to ongoing investigations.
